Sole practitioners (lawyers), like many small business owners, are challenged in that they are juggling too many things. There are three key areas and you can probably guess which one suffers the most.
There is:
the client work
all the various regulatory requirements and
the business.
If you guessed number 3 “the business”. You’re absolutely right!
This usually translates into not having the time to review how they operate with their clients:
Charge-out rates
payment terms
profitability
time recording
the list goes on.
In fact, one client I recently took on hadn’t reviewed his prices for 10 years and with his level of expertise and the amazing service he provides was lagging far behind. (Not anymore though)
Another client openly admitted that the business came last – that clients and the regulatory body were more important. Really?
Surely if you are to thrive in your business, rather than just survive, there has to be way of balancing the three parts equally.
Of course there is.
If you don’t look after your business, it won’t look after you.
